THE TIMELINE I'M TAKING AS CANON
The flying saucer crashes into Earth, forming the valley of Gravity Falls.
Gravity Falls' native population evacuates the valley under fear of the land being cursed, leaving pottery, blankets, and remnants of their language behind. In Journal 3, Ford mentions that some of their art has her Muse, Bill Cipher, on it.
8½th United States President Quentin Trembley discovers the valley of Gravity Falls and subsequently founds the town.
Twins Stanley and Stanford Pines are born in Glass Shard Beach, New Jersey.
Stan and Ford (10) start rebuilding an old ship they found in a cave.
Stan and Ford's (13) dad enrolls them in boxing lessons. He says it's to help them learn self-defense against bullies but he's a jackass.
The Pines family disowns Stan (17) after his destruction of Ford's (17) science project.
After being rejected from West Coast Tech, Ford (18) enrolls in Backupsmore University, and deciding to prove herself by working twice as hard, skips right over her Associate degree to enter her Bachelor's program.
Ford (21) gets her Bachelor of Science degree a year early and enters her Master's program.
Stan (21-32), now a drifter, tries his hand at solo treasure hunting. It goes about as well as could be expected. He travels in and out of the United States in this time as a salesman and moderately successful conman. He also goes to prison at least 3 times. Dipper and Mabel (12) time travel, ending up in front of the Mystery Shack and almost getting seen by Ford (26-32).
Ford's (23) Master's thesis is nationally ranked, and she earns her Master of Science degree. She is officially accepted into a doctoral program three years ahead of schedule.
Ford (26) completes her initial doctoral coursework and exams with flying colors, and receives a research grant of $100,000 for her dissertation.
Ford (26) arrives in Gravity Falls and begins documenting her findings in Journal 1.
Having filled up her first journal, Ford (29) starts work on Journal 2.
Ford (31) hits a roadblock in her research. She finds inscriptions about "a being with answers" in a cave, along with warnings against, but reads them aloud, and "her Muse" first appears in her dreams that day as she naps. "Hiya, smart guy! Woah, don't have a heart attack, you're not 92 yet." "Who are you?" "Name's Bill! And your name's Stanford Pines, the man who changed the world, but I'm getting ahead of ourselves; let's relax! Care for a game of interdimensional chess? Have a cup of tea."
Ford (33) begins to write Journal 3, six years since beginning of her research on Gravity Falls.
Many initial entries made: Floating Eyeballs, Giant Vampire Bats, Gnomes, Cursed Doors, "Myself," "My Muse," Forest Oddities (Moth Man, Beard Cubs, Portal Potty, Scampfire, Kill Billy, Soothsquitos, "Steve"), the Invisible Wizard, the Abominable Bro-Man, Barf Fairies, Leprecorn, Stomach-Faced Duck, Question Quail, Cowl, Hawktopus, Woodpecker-pecker, the Bottomless Pit, "A Bit of History," and finding the Northwest document...
Ford (33) confronts Preston Northwest about his family's crimes, and accidentally figures out they have some connection to the Great Flood; she finds a ton of bodies under the Shack from the disaster.
Many more entries made: the Undead, magical items, "Spells" (the only spell on that page seems to be the zombie summoning curse), more Magic Items (Cloak of Occasional Visibility, Crystal Baldwin, Tie of Possession, Giant's Thumb), Truth Telling Teeth, Height Altering (crystals). At this point, Ford ends up staying two nights in "Boyish" Dan Corduroy's guest cabin "in a remote part of the woods," to try to get away and clear her head. Dan doesn't want to let her stay, but since she hired him to build the Shack and paid him super well, he feels he has to. She makes a ton of entries on ghosts while there, before fleeing.
Eventually Ford (34) hits a major wall trying to figure out her Theory and gets incredibly frustrated. Bill comes to her in another dream and proposes the theory of a "weirdness dimension" (though knowing it's not real) and gives her the blueprints for a portal machine that would help her find it. They tells her that "this is the way genius happens; a little help from a friend." She obviously does not see them as a friend, instead nearly worshipping them, perhaps even moreso now than before.
Ford (34) realizes she can't finish building the machine herself, and decides she has to ask her old classmate, Fiddleford McGucket (?), for help.
Ford (34) finally actually asks McGucket for help, and he agrees, starting to make suggestions even over the phone.
Ford (34) is overwhelmed when McGucket finally arrives.
Ford (34) keeps Bill a secret from Fiddleford, and starts writing some things in code. Ford (??) and McGucket take a several day long hike to scavenge technology from Crash Site Omega, discovering several new oddities along the way (the Plaidypus, Island Head Beast, Geodites, the Hide Behind, and Cow Circles); Ford muses back on what Bill had said about getting help from a friend. On their way back into town, McGucket is attacked by the Gremloblin. Haunted by this experience, McGucket creates the Memory Gun. Ford tells McGucket to destroy it, and McGucket promises to, but just erases some of her memory instead. They go to the carnival to try to take their minds off it (or rather Ford hopes it will help take McGucket's mind off it). Ford gets his fortune told, and is very sceptical. McGucket meets a carnie (Ivan Wexler), and furtively offers him use of the Memory Gun. McGucket proposes the Bunker and constructs it (using local lumberjacks, whose memories he erases so they can't remember what they were helping to build; he keeps this from Ford). Ford discovers the Shapeshifter while they're excavating, and begins to experiment on him. Eventually, they have to freeze him, after he attacks McGucket (likely for constantly threatening to freeze him eventually anyway). Ford agrees to let Bill possess her body for the first time, to help her, the agreement to last indefinitely, apparently. She also accepts their offer of friendship, finally, but is obviously still putting them on a huge pedestal. "Then it's a deal. From now until the end of time." "Just let me into your mind, Stanford." "Please, call me... a friend."
McGucket tells Ford (34) that he's calculated that starting up the machine would be too dangerous, that there's something wrong. He tries to talk Ford into publishing her findings (in the form of a document he wrote for her using her notes), becoming rich and just moving on. Ford is insulted and suspicious of Fiddleford's intentions, and refuses.
They test the machine that morning and Fiddleford goes through on accident. Ford (34) pulls him back but he is too frightened and angry to explain what he saw (spoilers: he only saw Bill), only talking about the end of the world, telling her she has to stop, and he quits the project. Ford angrily denounces needing his help, but after all her past treatment she can't help but start to wonder, and she does remember the warnings on the cave wall about Bill. She begins to wonder, and very quickly realizes Bill was using her, too, and was potentially very dangerous.
Ford (34) confronts Bill, and turns on them completely in an angry, hurt panic, shutting down the portal. She finally writes the Bill Cipher warning page. She becomes very paranoid, beginning to add notes in invisible ink as well as code, and stops sleeping, a decision only reinforced when Bill tries to possess her several times when she drops off to sleep, writing in her journal in code. Somewhere during all that, McGucket founds the Blind Eye Society. His mind begins to deteriorate due to repeated use of his memory erasing gun. Ford discovers the existence of the society, but doesn't know what it is and is afraid it's connected to Bill. BILL'S MESSAGES WRITTEN (COMBINED SYMBOL SUBSTITUTION CIPHER):
| |
Ford (34) sends Stan (34) a postcard, and hopes that with his help, she can hide the journals. After Stan starts a fight with her instead, Ford is sucked into an alternate dimension. Stan (34) starts running the Mystery Shack, stealing the name of Stanford Pines. The Government takes notice of some odd readings in Gravity Falls, Oregon. BILL'S MESSAGES, FINAL:
| |
Jesus "Soos" Alzamirano Ramirez is born.
Wendy Corduroy is born.
Twins Mabel and Dipper Pines are born. (Stan and Ford are 49.)
Gideon Gleeful is born.
Soos turns 12, and comes to the realization that his father is not coming back to see him. Soos begins to work at the Mystery Shack. (Stan is 52.)
Beginning of series. Dipper (12) discovers Journal 3. (Stan and Ford are 61. Soos is 21. Wendy is 16.)
Gravity Falls celebrates Summerween. (Stan and Ford are 62.)
Sometime during this week, "Dreamscaperers" takes place. By this point, Bill is no longer trying to work with the portal at all, and is chasing up opportunities to get into their world in a different way. Having even Gideon as an ally would be invaluable, and Bill is freaked and angry to have that meddled with and ruined, but impressed enough by the kids to drop the issue. (Stan and Ford are 62.)
And somewhere in here, the events of "Sock Opera" occur. Bill really doesn't want the portal opened, because ideally being in this world with it not in any danger is the goal, and decides destroying even one of the Journals would help with that. They also knows at this point that the kids are capable of meddling, even if they's not really sore about that. (Stan and Ford are 62.)
Ford (62) comes back through the portal, after having spent 27 years on the other side (close enough to 30 for people to talk about it that way).
Ford manages to seal the rift that opened up when Stan opened the portal.
Dipper and Mabel celebrate their 13th birthday. Stan (62) retires and gives ownership of the Mystery Shack to Soos (22).
Dipper and Mabel (13) leave Gravity Falls for Piedmont, California. With Waddles.
The predicted end of the world. (Ironically, when Time Baby is supposed to re-form.)
The year Blendin Blandin is from. (So the universe is still around.) |
